Food, fun, and community are all things you’ll experience at the 4-H Chili Cook-Off. The annual event allows youth to showcase their culinary and life skills and raise funds to benefit the Johnson County 4-H program.
On Friday, March 8, 2024, thirteen teams, consisting of twenty-six youth, competed as individuals or teams with their favorite homestyle, unique, or spicy chili recipes. Throughout the event, youth served their Chileans to the audience and competed for the People’s Choice award, determined by audience votes. At the same time, a judging panel selects the top chiles in each category.
The Ballin’ Boys’ team, including Cooper Ingle, Trey James, and Jacob Brown, took home first place in the Homestyle category.
Parent Mollie Ingle commented, “This was the boys’ first time competing in the chili cook-off, and they really enjoyed the experience. They will definitely be back next year to compete.”
The award for Most Unique went to team Cowboy Delight (Coleman Rider and Nathan Supplee). At the same time, the Spicy Sisters (Savanna Younce, Nyiah Reece, and Allie Mullins) took home the top award in the Spiciest category.
Chili Billie’s team (Kaylee Mahala, Lilly Bendon, and Faith Roberts) won the People’s Choice award.
When asked about her take on the 4-H Chili Cook-Off, Dawn Roberts commented, “It’s one of Johnson County’s hidden gems. Great food, great atmosphere, and for a great cause.”
The annual dessert auction is always exciting; this year was no exception. Volunteers provided numerous baked goods to help raise funds to support Johnson County 4-H.
When asked why she donates so many desserts, 4-H alumna and volunteer Rachel Ransom replied, “One of my favorite verses is Psalm 34:8, “Oh taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him. I have always loved baking and making things that people enjoy, so this part comes easy…the auction is always really fun. I love watching people bid and laugh and have a tasty treat to take home later. Coming to the 4-H chili cook-off has been a family tradition since I was in 4-H. I love how it brings our community together. Growing up, I was in 4-H and reaped many of the benefits, so this is a small and really fun way to give back!!! If you have never come, please plan to come next year.”
Extension Director Sarah Arnold agreed and added, “Extension has always been about serving families in local communities. The chili cook-off provides opportunities for youth to learn new skills, engage with friends and family, and bring the community together. So it’s very fitting that the event is held during Extension Month.”
